If you want a Canon, these are the best entry level DSLR’s for them
XS
XSI
TI1i
T2i
They can be found from $400 to $800. The T2i is the most advanced and has as a video function as well.
The best camera from Canon to compete would be the 50D. It is a little more expensive ( Around $900) but comparable to the D90.
Other Choices are
Pentax K-7 $800
Canon 7D $1300
Nikon D300 $1200
I think the best value are the Nikon D90 and the Pentax k7
