Should I use Etrade or scott trade for someone who is new and knows nothing about stock?

I want to learn and invest in the stock market but I don’t know where to really start. There seems to be different sites which you can use to begin investing like etrade or scott trade. Can someone tell which one is the best to use.

Can a commodity broker use the balance money in margin account for trading purpose on behalf of fictitious a/c?

Balance in margin account of a trader(investor) remains idle most of the time to the tune of 70% of the deposit. Only up-to 30% of the funds used for trading purpose. Can the broker utilize the funds for trading on behalf of of third parties who is not the original contributor.

How do mutual funds and firms purchase large amounts of shares?

Do they spread it out over every couple hours, every couple days? Watch the level II quotes and fill up any large orders that are near current trading price? Good-til-Cancelled limit orders that last forever and remain very close to the trading price? How do they do it?

Did you know that mutual funds are NOT trying to make you money?

Mutual funds are just putting your money to work as stated in the prospectus. If they have money to put to work, they put it to work, even in this bearish environment. If you are buying and holding, don’t look at your mutual fund balances this week!

My 401K account is at Schwab. When I rebalance (mostly selling stock funds to buy bond funds these days) I prefer to wait until almost 4:00. Reason: a few times I’ve traded early in the day, and been stung by a big sell-off.
