I’m in my early 20s and I’m trying to plan for the distant future so I really want to open a Roth IRA but I can’t decide nor do I know what I should do. Opening an IRA at a Bank and only getting 3% is almost pointless but it’s better than a regular market savings account. I’m looking into T. Rowe Price or other companies like them to handle my IRA and invest that IRA into , but with the economy so poor and the plunging I don’t know if my will be safe. How should I start my ?

  • How should I set up retirement accounts?

I’m 21 years old and will be graduating from college this year. I am well aware that proper planning is important at a young age for retirement which is why I want to start on day one. I know a few things about investing but not .
My thought is that using my employers’ 401k plan is best as max contribution levels are pretty high. What about IRAs? What is the benefit/purpose of these over 401k plans?
How does one open a 401k, is it with a specific company or any bank? How are they managed (by me or someone else)?
What can invest in with a 401k (any limits or regulations)?
And any other thought anyone wants to add.

    Thanks…

  • A question about retirement investing.?

I’m 68, retired in March and my ex employeer suggested that I contact this financial advisor to get some ideas and help about rolling over my 401K. He suggests combining my 401k and my IRA and putting them into " ing " with a guaranteed 7% and taking an inheritance (approx. the same amount as the ira and 401k) and putting it into an actively managed plan which charges around 2.5% instead of letting it languish or drop in the current with Wash Mutual and Fidelity. I expressed interest in some growth, assessability, and the possibility of leaving an inheritance. Financial advisors opinions would be appreciated. I have no debt besides 0 monthly mtg. payment, I owe 60K on the house.

  • Best discount broker for SEP IRA account with frequent trades?

What discount broker would be best for a SEP IRA account with frequent, real time trades? I don’t care about research quality. Mainly looking for the broker with the cheapest trading fees. (Yes, I know this is not the best strategy for . This is a secondary account in which I will put only what I can afford to lose. I’m doing it for fun and for a learning experience.)

Hello fellow members. Need just a bit of advice. My company just canceled our 401(k) plan due to low enrollment and higher expenses. I didn’t have a lot in there around 4k, as we paid off a cargo plane load of debt in the last couple of years.

I plan to open a Roth IRA and contribute the max to it. What would be my best choice of to look at. Should I use a discount broker like Scottrade? I am married, my wife is self employed, owns her own cleaning business. We only have our mortgage as debt, around 114K, both cars are paid off.

After I max my Roth IRA, what would be the best for us. We are 48 years old and with no other debt but the house we should be able to save around a min. of 1K per month or so. Where in the very smart people of this forum should we invest our Roth IRA and the outside the IRA.

  • Retirement investing: Vanguard funds or a local "investment" person?

I’ve been saving for my & my wife’s retirement (per ROTH and Traditional IRAs) for quite a while now. At first, I used Morgan Stanley (loaded funds w/ great histories); this was for about 5 years. Needless to say, the "broker" there didn’t give a rat’s dropping about my account, probably because I wasn’t a big fish. I never received phone calls from her – I was always the one who intitated (some) interest. I changed careers, moved back to my hometown, and am now using a local "investment" person for retirement. The family of funds he offers (through NYLife) are also loaded; and they all have great histories. Problem is, those histories don’t take into account inflation (3% per year) NOR the amount they ding you for managing funds year after year after year. WHY DOESN’T EVERYONE USE VANGUARD & PAY AS LITTLE AS 0.25% PER YEAR TO MANAGE RETIREMENT ? Am I a TOTAL idiot for purchasing loaded funds in the first place? If I switch to Vanguard now, I’ll pay some hefty fees.

  • What are the best vehicles for retirement investing for a combination of salaried, self-employed, and pension?

I’m retiring from the military after 20 years and moving on to a second career (still about 20 years from ultimate retirement), and looking for the best plan for accumulating retirement funds. I expect to have considerably more income than my current standard of living and would like to invest the maximum possible in IRAs and similar vehicles with tax advantages.

I am married (wife is not employed outside the home) and will have three sources of income next year: my primary job will be salaried at K/year including an employer-matched (to 6% of salary) 401K plan; I’ll have a K/year self-employed consulting contract (potential for Keogh?), and I’ll receive K/year military retirement pension (unearned income). The sum AGI puts me over the limit for contributing to Roth IRAs, but I’m confused as to whether the 401K, Traditional IRA (for self and wife), or a Keogh plan are better, or can be used simultaneously. Assuming lots of $$$ to invest, where should I throw my ?
