    Not sure whether this is true of other countries, but in India govt gives tax sops for investing in equities, eg you can claim tax exemption for investing in certain equity oriented and you dont pay any tax for profit you make on equity you hold for more than 1 year. On the other hand, any interest on in banks is taxed at upto 30%. Would’nt it serve governments purpose to have people put their savings in Banks. The govt has more control over this and can actually control its flow into ‘priority sectors’, eg infrastructure in India, through legislation and tax sops to the banks. Also this is more ’stable’ because people dont break their fixed deposits in a hurry. Risk of losing the is also lower.

    I’m in India, just got a good job, and a newbie to investment.
    Could you help me with the best websites/blogs that could help in determining which to avoid and which to choose?
    I’ve heard that Government are risky. Is that true? Why?
    Is HDFC bank’s better performing than that of other banks? Which would you recommend? I’m looking for tax saving funds and long term funds (6 years or more).
