  Also, I keep reading that the fees on institutional funds are lower, however looking at the Fidelity funds they have front end loads of up to 5.75%! Given the low expenses associated with today’s ETFs, are institutional funds still considered a superior investment, and if so, why?

  I just start learning on investing in stock market. I wonder if there is public information on institutional trades on a particular stock.
  For example, is there a way for me to know that institutions start to increase a level of accumulation of the stock?

   

• Can anyone provide statistics on levels of U.S. stock trading activity over time?

  I’m particularly interested in trading by indiviual / retail (as opposed to institutional) investors. Data on the specific class of "day traders" would be useful Generally, I want to know how individual participation in stock markets has been changing over the past few years.

• Are Electronic Communications Networks / ECNs for Stock Market open 24/7 or is there times when they r closed?

  I am looking at GM stock charts on Nasdaq after hours but it does not show the date . I am thinking the chart is showing Wednesdays data since normal trading ended early plus it likely was closed for Christmas. I will propbably have to wait for Pre-Market data. Is there other times when institutional investors do not have access to ECNs?

   

• How can I track institutional block trades on the stock market?

  Thomson Financial used to offer I-Watch to do this but it’s no longer available.

   

• Will increasing margin/capital requirements in commodity investing hurt the "Average Joe investor"?

  With the increases in gas prices, I’ve tried coping with such by buying an ETF that invests in oil futures (ticker: OIL.) When OIL spikes in price, I sell some shares and uses the profits to pay for the higher gas at the pump. It’s not a perfect solution but I’ve been managing to hedge the increases in gas prices for quite some time this way.

  Now, if the gov’t wants to increase the margin or capital requirements to invest in commodities, will this affect me in any way? Will I still have access to these investment vehicles such as ETFs that invest in commodities? It seems that institutional investors can easily meet the new margin requirements while barring the Average Joe from profitting from the commodities bubble; the Average Joe will still be paying higher prices AND yet, he cannot take advantage of the commodities bubble any longer.

  I’m concerned about the situation but my knowledge is limited.. please offer a rebuttal.

   

• How should I allocate my 401(k)?

  I want to start investing in my company’s 401(k), but am lost as to how I should allocate. I’m 24 and just want to be smart about it! I work for Darden Restaurants, so could also buy company stock at a 15% discount (that’s the ESOP fund below). They have Target Retirement funds, but I thought I could earn a better return allocating myself.
