Should Congress make speculators on the commodities exchanges put up higher margin payments??
The speculators are driving oil prices and other prices out of sight by putting up small margin payments and forcing prices ever higher. If the government made them pay in full for their buys it could reduce the rise in prices. The system is breaking and washington is ignoring the problem again.

Yes they should. But as the previous respondent more or less stated, big money and the free market ideology has a stranglehold on the political ststem so speculation will not be reined in despite the damaging effect it has on global markets, national economies and ordinary people who are not rich enough to ignore the price hikes.

Fine, but then they would be putting back in place all the safeguards which Reagan destroyed…
Big business has too much influence in Washington for any real effort to rein in these margin call specialists.
