Like many people nearing/in retirement, they were getting scared seeing the small amount of they do have in retirement getting smaller and smaller. This fear led them to sell AFTER the market went so low. I would not have advised them to do this. But, now that they have, what advice should I give them? Buy again?

Perhaps it’s not a bad idea to sell shrinking funds. Let him do what he feels is more appropriate for him. There are some good mutual funds that are still gaining or maintaining value in these bad times. Do some research and you’ll find those. Bonds it’s another option. Definitely when you are approaching retirement, it’s not the time to play with investments.
