the mutual funds are many companies that your investment company buys into, so when one does bad another could do well keeping it going, with individual stocks, when it does bad you have no other one to keep it going, so if for a long term it’s fine to buy mutual funds. You can either buy on line from such places as fidelity or oppenheimer or vangaurd or even thru the banks, but be sure to ask what their fees are as that could mean alot if you don’t have alot to invest. they will take out their fees even if you don’t make anything.

Over the long haul – 10 years or more – you will always get a better return on your investment with mutual funds than with individual stocks – at least, for the non-professional investor. To do better, you would need to manage your stock portfolio actively hour by hour.
Make sure the mutual funds have low management fees though – less than 1% is the requirement. Any funds with higher fees are probably not going to give you a good return.

Definition of Mutual Funds: You should know the meaning of mutual funds, before you choose to invest in mutual funds. These funds are a type of security that can be traded on the stock market, allowing shareholders to buy and sell shares in the funds. The revenue generated by purchase of shares is used by mutual fund manager to buy more shares of specific stocks, bonds, and other market securities and money market instruments.
Since the prices of the stocks, bonds, and other securities held by the mutual fund vary, the value of the fund changes. The average value of every share of the mutual fund is fixed daily based on the total value of the underlying securities held by the fund.
