You don’t need to buy a minimum, at least not if you use an online service. You could buy one single share of stock if you wanted to (although I wouldn’t recommend doing that).
The easiest way is to open an account at any one of the online traders (ScottTrade, eTrade, Sharebuilder, etc.)
You deposit money into your account. Then you decide what stocks you want to buy and place an order for them. Within a short period of time, you’ll own those stocks. They’re yours until you decide to sell them again.
Remember that each trade (buy/sell) you make costs you a fee. Online brokers typically charge about $10 per trade.

you would be buying odd lots which usually will cost more… you will have to use a discount broker that requires no min initial invesment like sogotrade . com however you know nothing so you should first by a book about stock investing.

Now is a great time to invest. Here are the basics. Women actually do better than men because they follow some simple rules.
The Average investor cannot beat the market.
Invest gradually out of every paycheck.
Buy the whole market, not a particular stock. I recommend VTI… it is a stock made up of the entire market.
Use tax deferred vehicles like IRAs and 401ks.
Diversify, Diversify, Diversify!…
This means Stocks, Bonds, Real Estate ETFs (IYR for example), Commondity related stocks, Emerging markets.
Sprinkle a little bit everywhere.
Get a book on Portfolio management and material on diversification. Don’t time the market or day-trade!
