You must do your research, this idea of investing was great a decade ago, but now, its a mess. Stocks can crash, drop, at any moment with the instability in today’s markets. You must research the history of a company and especially pay attention to news about the company. Long term investing is a good place to keep money at to help it grow, and short term is for more experienced. The best trading site is Scottrade that offers low fees and is cheaper than the rest. I would start by going to finance.yahoo.com and look up your favorite companies. The interactive charts are amazing which will show you years of trading history. Try to find something that is trading really low but has news of growing back to its regular price per share. There are some very low stocks but risk going into bankruptcy. Banks seem to hit rock bottom and hope to grow with government help. Wachovia would be great if they cleaned up their mess before merging with Wells Fargo. Ford and Chrysler are on the lowest end ever, as stocks for ford is 4bucks. This won’t change until people buy cars again, which will be a year or two. Once ford starts to increase price per share at a steady pace, then long term investment will be great. Im talking to much, have fun.

you should begin by understanding how the market works, or if you want to go head-long into the fray, which is highly unadvisable and will probably not end well, then get a trading account with a company like E trade or scottrade. they charge about a 7$ commission for any number of shares both ways, so trade enough that 14$ does not make an effect on your profits. good luck

I started reading about the market when I was twelve, and started trading at 15. When you know the basics (what a stock is, what the dow is etc.) Just jump in with a little money. Trust me you will learn more actually investing, than you ever will from a book. By the way I am now 18 and an active options trader.

Hi, Jake,
Educate yourself on the basics such as with Investopedia.com or Investing for Dummies.
But before you put your money down, read A RANDOM WALK DOWN WALL STREET by Burton Malkiel. Because you need to get over the idea that you can outsmart the market, that investing is "beating" the market. If that one doesn’t work, also read SECRET CODE OF SUCCESSFUL INVESTORS by James Glassman.
Or read the market wizards books by Jack Schwager, which all conclude that you need to have an edge, then ask yourself what your edge is over the hordes of money managers with Phds in Math and Finance and enough computers to send a man to the next galaxy — and don’t put your money down until you figure out what your edge is.
Learning from your own experiences at using your own money will give you a fast education, but remember that true wisdom is learning from OTHER PEOPLE’S experience. It’s much much cheaper.
But if you have to be burned before you’ll learn that you can lose money, then go ahead and get burned.
By the way, you can make money with options trading, but that’s NOT investing. It requires an education on top of learning how to invest.
And I’ll always maintain that the smartest, least risky strategy is to invest for income.
best, Rick Stooker
