I started investing in 7th grade (using a custodian account), traded while in high school making enough money to pay for tuition and buy a car, traded in college to pay tuition, and have been active in the market ever since.
Trading/investing is not all about making money, it’s more important to protect what you have. Not all trades are profitable but all losses must be controlled and limited.

I have lost far more than made these past 2 years. My experience has been similar to yours – most of my trusted friends have lost, and lost significantly in some cases. But the news media and the business journals all talk as if everyone has recovered all their losses since 2008, and even made money on a net basis. I find that a little difficult to believe.
I think the media has a vested interest in making it seem as if the bad times are all behind us now, so we can start spending again. How one does that with no job is beyond me…….

I have an IRA – began investing in it 1986. Put 50k into it & today it is worth 200k. I also have some individual stocks. One is near what I paid for it, others are worth 25, 50% more than I paid for them.
My 401k is up only 4% ytd. But considering the brutal bear market we’ve just been thru, I am not too displeased.
