This site is the knowledge leader on mutual funds. It is free for the basics but you to have to register.

http://www.morningstar.com/

For closed end mutual funds this site is excellent.

You are right to want to educate yourself - it is very important to know what it is you are investing in, so that you will be more comfortable with the inevitable ups and downs you will experience.

Morningstar is a good one, and Yahoo has a pretty good education site, at http://finance.yahoo.com/funds/mutual_funds_101.

Also, you might want to think about going down to your library or book store, and picking up one or two books on mutual fund basics, like Mutual Funds for Dummies, or Bogle on Mutual Funds.

I hope that helps. Good luck!
