Can mutual funds hold bonds and stocks or is it just one or the other?

If they can, would it be smart to appropriate to get a mutual fund that is 60% stock and 40% bond to diversify in one purchase? Thanks!

Yes, there are mutual funds that hold both stocks and bonds. One of the 60/40 funds (actually 67/33) is OAKBX. Ten year annual return of 8.86% not bad. VWELX is another 67/33. Ten year annual return is 6.35%. Among the no load funds those are probably the best of the lot. Not quite 60/40 but close.

Mutual funds can hold MANY investments – stocks, bonds and other entities. A fund that holds such a mixture is referred to as a "balanced" or "asset allocation" fund. What the "smart" fund is for you depends on your specific financial situation and investing objectives.
The Vanguard Star Fund (ticker VGSTX) is but one example of a good balanced fund.

Balance funds and lifecycle funds hold both bonds & stocks. Is this smart(?), I guess that depends on what the individual investor wants. For the small investor, I think this is an excellent choice. Check out Vanguard’s Star fund VGSTX, Fidelity Balanced fund FBALX, or TR Price Balance RPBAX.
